Join Blair Academy’s Head Coach, Joe Mantegna and Former SCCC Head Men’s Basketball Coach and current Blair’s Assistant Coach Cornell Thomas as they discuss player development, practice planning, game strategy and coaching philosophy.

Youth coaches are the most important influence in a young basketball players career.

COACH JOE MANTEGNA

Coach Mantegna arrived at Blair in 1999 and has built Blair into a national prep school basketball powerhouse. Blair’s record since Mantegna’s arrival is 199 - 80, including seven of the last ten MAPL league titles (2000-2003, 2005, 2006, 2010) and seven trips to the NJ Prep A State Finals, including a State Title in 2009. Blair was the only school in the country to put two players (Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva) in the 2003 McDonald’s All-American Game. Five Blair alums have played in the NCAA Final Four, 27 former Blair players have ended up on Division I rosters in the last 11 years, and 19 are currently playing college basketball, while three are in the NBA (Royal Ivey, Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva).

The Star Ledger named Blair Academy’s 2001 team as the “NJ Prep Team of the Year.” In 2000, Mantegna was named the New Jersey State Prep School “Coach of the Year” by the Star Ledger, and the Blairstown Press named him “2002 Boy’s Warren County Coach of the Year.”

COACH CORNELL THOMAS

Coach Thomas was the head men’s basketball coach at Sussex County Community College for the past 6 seasons. In that time he has compiled the most wins in SCCC men’s basketball history, the most wins in a single season (20), the only team in SCCC history to make the regional finals, and has developed 5 all conference players, a two time All American and player of the year, and 2 academic all Americans.

SCCC during Coach Thomas’s coaching stint was the only 2 year school at the time to get the Sam Shoenfeld sportsmanship award in 2005. Which is the award presented to the college or university, which in the judgment of the CBOA, best exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators." Coach Thomas has also been the head of Crossroads Basketball for 5 years. At crossroads he develops young players anywhere from elementary school to college. Over 20 players have gone through the crossroads program an onto play in college, 2 currently at the Division 1 level.
